Highway 101 from Olympia to Long Beach

The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway in Washington follows Highway 101 through Hood Canal and along the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. See lush rain forests, try fresh Dungeness Crab and oysters, learn about local Native culture, trek along rugged beaches, and immerse yourself in maritime history. Take your time exploring each corner of the state’s coast, starting from Washington State’s capital, Olympia, and ending in Long Beach, while stopping along the way to enjoy Olympic National Park, picturesque coastal towns, and more.

Olympia
Washington State’s capital blends a lively arts scene with a walkable waterfront and diverse dining options. Grab coffee from a local roaster or visit the Washington State Capitol Campus before hitting the road.

Hood Canal
Stretching along the eastern edge of the Olympic Peninsula, Hood Canal is known for its watersports, oysters, and waterfront communities. Stop in towns like Hoodsport and Union for fresh seafood, kayaking, and scenic shoreline views.

Port Townsend
Port Townsend boasts a picturesque downtown with Victorian architecture, sailing and kayaking opportunities, and fresh seafood. Visit nearby Fort Worden Historical State Park or walk or cycle the čičməhán (cheech-ma-han) Trail to learn about the area’s Indigenous peoples, who have called the peninsula home since time immemorial.

Sequim
Often called the Lavender Capital of North America, Sequim is known for its fragrant fields and arts community. Explore the Sequim Lavender Trail during the summer bloom season or head to the nearby Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge.  

Port Angeles
This port city makes a great base for visiting Olympic National Park. You’ll find a robust arts scene, Indigenous culture and history, local boutiques, and easy access to outdoor recreation. The city also provides ferry access from Canada and serves as a jumping-off point for the Strait of Juan de Fuca Highway.

Olympic National Park
From alpine ridges to temperate rain forests and rugged coastlines, this park showcases an incredible range of ecosystems. Drive up to Hurricane Ridge for mountain views, paddle Lake Crescent, relax at Sol Duc Hot Springs, or hit the beach.

Forks
Billed as the rainiest town in the contiguous U.S., Forks is a popular stop for Twilight enthusiasts. The town is home to the Forever Twilight in Forks Collection, logging history, and access to beaches, lakes, and the Hoh Rain Forest.

Aberdeen
With roots in timber and music, Aberdeen offers a mix of culture and history. The hometown of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, the city celebrates grunge music at The Music Project. Other sights include the International Mermaid Museum, Lake Wynoochee, and historic homes.   

Westport
A short spur off the main route leads to Westport, a classic Washington beach town known for surfing, fishing, and fresh seafood. Visit the Grays Harbor Lighthouse or enjoy storm watching in the winter months.

Long Beach Peninsula & Washington’s Evergreen Coast
Part of Washington’s Evergreen Coast, Long Beach lives up to its name with 28 miles of sandy shoreline. This family-vacation favorite is known for hosting the Washington State International Kite Festival each summer. Bike along the beach, dig for razor clams, stop into local shops, and more.
