explore the Yakima river canyon scenic byway

State Route 821 between Ellensburg and the Yakima Valley

Following the winding Yakima River between Ellensburg and the Yakima Valley, the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway winds through a dramatic desert landscape. Pass by rugged basalt cliffs towering above the river as golden hills stretch across the horizon. This peaceful drive is a striking contrast to the state’s western forests. Whether you’re fishing, floating, hiking, or simply enjoying the scenery, the canyon offers a memorable glimpse into Washington’s beauty. Cellphone coverage is limited in many areas of the Yakima River Canyon, so it’s recommended to download offline maps before heading out.

Time Your Trip: While the Yakima River Canyon is typically open year-round, summer is a popular time to visit for outdoor recreation and water sports. Unlike the state’s higher-elevation mountain passes, this scenic byway does not usually close in winter.

Ellensburg
The northern gateway to the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway, Ellensburg is a vibrant college town known for its historic downtown, arts scene, and ranching and rodeo culture. It serves as a convenient starting point with full visitor services before the road enters the canyon’s more remote terrain.

BLM Recreation Areas
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) operates five developed recreation sites and campground areas: Umtanum Creek, Lmuma Creek, Big Pines, Bighorn, and Roza. These sites provide access to hiking trails, river launches, and wildlife viewing throughout the canyon.
